Today, we dive into a very sad update for fans of The Young and the Restless. We often critique the show because we want it to be not just good, but great. Unfortunately, it hasn’t lived up to its potential in recent years. We even outlined a 10-step plan to fix what’s broken. However, today, we take a break from complaining to actually praise the soap for a surprising twist.
Despite our skepticism, we’re captivated by the storyline involving good and evil twins. Typically, such a plot feels overdone in daytime dramas, harking back to classics like David Canary as Adam and Stuart Chandler on All My Children, or Anne Heche as Victoria and Marley on Another World. Yet, in the capable hands of Christopher Cousins, the reveal of Allen Martin and its implications for Ashley and her alters are truly fascinating.
Is this storyline original? Not really. Does it make sense? Not entirely, especially considering most cases of dissociative identity disorder stem from childhood abuse. Nevertheless, we’re willing to go along with it because it offers a refreshing break from the show’s stagnant business plots. It’s certainly more believable than Jordan surviving her stint as Victor’s subterranean house guest.
In real life, few seniors could endure such an ordeal without their blood pressure medication, pickleball games, and nightly Wheel of Fortune. As this arc nears its end, with Ashley finally able to close her revival of Alice’s spinoff Flo via Belle, we can only hope The Young and the Restless keeps Allen around. His character, whose last chance at romance went to someone else, deserves a lasting presence on the show.
