The actor, who portrayed Matthew Aylward in the BBC period drama, left the show earlier this year when his character moved to New York. Olly will now take on the role of a surgeon in the long-standing hospital drama Casualty.

“He has already got viewers’ hot under the collar on ‘Call the Midwife’, but their pulses will be truly racing when they see Olly embrace the steamy new role,” an insider revealed about Olly’s new role.

Despite filming for the new series being well underway, fans will have to wait until 2025 to see Olly’s first scenes.

In October 2023, it was reported that his character was written out after marrying Trixie Franklin (Helen George) in the previous series. A source said: “The news of Olly’s departure has left the cast and crew stunned and upset. They all thought he was a mainstay on the series after his prominent wedding scenes to Helen last season. Some feel it’s a bit unfair and he is well liked by everyone.”

The sudden departure has caused concern among the remaining cast members.

‘Call the Midwife’ is going to be a fixture on our screens for quite some time, having been commissioned by the BBC for two more seasons. This guarantees that the beloved series isn’t going anywhere at least until 2026.

When the decision was made public earlier this year, creator and writer Heidi Thomas couldn’t contain her excitement, stating: “I’m overjoyed by the news that the doors of Nonnatus House will be open for a few more years! “.

She also took the opportunity to express her fondness for the show and everyone who works on it, saying: “‘Call the Midwife’ is the pride and joy of all who work on it, but it’s our fantastic, loyal audience that matters most. We are a family behind the scenes, on the screen, and in front of the telly, and I’m thrilled that we’re all heading into the 1970’s together.”
