Ruth Jones responded after her co-star performed his “worst audition ever”. The Gavin and Stacey star, 57, recently extended her run as Mother Superior in the stage production of Sister Act.

She is joined by Lee Mead, who will portray Eddie Souther and Alexandra Burke, who is taking over from Beverley Knight as main character Deloris Van Cartier.

Despite never working with Ruth before, this isn’t the first time Lee has crossed paths with the actress. Speaking exclusively to Express.co.uk, the Any Dream Will Do winner, 42, recalled the moment he auditioned for Stella.

The on-screen star played the titular role in the comedy-drama series which ran from 2012 until 2017. Lee explained: “It was quite funny, I saw Ruth for the first time a few days ago and I said, ‘You won’t remember me but I auditioned for you for Stella for the boyfriend’.

The Casualty star continued: “It was quite a few years ago and it was the worst audition that I’ve ever given. Despite Lee branding the audition “terrible”, Ruth didn’t remember it like that.

She told him: “I’m sure you weren’t.” Lee added: “But I was, I was terrible. But it’s lovely to be working together years later. We’ve got a couple of moments together on stage which is nice.”

Lee admitted he feels “lucky” to be working alongside his new co-stars as he opened up about their dynamic on stage. “I feel very lucky,” he said. “I have never worked with Ruth or Alex before. They are so lovely and so talented which is great.”

The dad-of-one added: “Myself and Alex have a lot of scenes together because I’m playing Eddie, the nerdy cop who falls for Doloris. For Alex, it’s a massive role, but she’s incredible and drives the whole show.

“Already I can see that we have a good chemistry going on and our scenes are going really well together. It’s going to be a lot of fun.”

Lee has been touring solo over the last few years, which is why he is looking forward to being part of a production with a huge cast. The Holby City star quipped: “It’s nice having a company because I do a lot of solo stuff with my concerts where I’m on my own.

“It’s been a while since my last show. My last show, Chicago, was over a year ago so it’s been a while. It’s great being a part of a company.”
