Coronation Street actress Jane Hazlegrove to return in new role after 34 years away

The actress, who is also known as Dixie in Casualty, last appeared on the cobbles in 1985 and will be playing Gemma and Paul Winter’s mum

Actress Jane Hazlegrove is set to return to Coronation Street for a new role after 34 years away from the cobbles.

The soap star, 50, was last seen in Weatherfield in 1985 and will be playing Paul and Gemma Winter’s mum.

She previously played Sue Clayton, who was the daughter of Harry and Connie Clayton and lived at 11 Coronation Street .

Casualty fans will also recognise her from the long-running BBC soap, in which she played Dixie for 10 years from 2006.

Jane said that she was “thrilled” to be joining the soap.

“It’s where I started my apprenticeship as a very young actor. I can’t wait to get stuck in,” she said.

Jane will be playing Gemma’s stranged mum Bernie after her daughter welcomes a new baby in the midst of her chaotic life.

She will make her first appearance in July and is described as an “old raver who still sees herself as a free spirit”.

Bernie, like her daughter, does not like being tied down to a job or any responsibilities, especially when it means hard work for her!

Gemma’s mum will appear on the cobbles after failing to pick up her daughter and instantly begins ruffling feathers.

Despite her less than stellar record as a mum, Bernie does love her kids but has struggled with juggling being a party animal and a part-time parent.

While Gemma is thrilled to have her mum back in her life, Paul is much more wary of his mum’s motives. However Bernie is determined to support her daughter for once.

A Corrie spokesperson said: “Like mother, like daughter.

“We are very pleased that the fantastic Jane Hazlegrove has agreed to join the cast as the irrepressible and impossible Gemma’s even more irrepressible and impossible mother. Fur will fly!”
