Casualty’s Rash Masum star details real life tragedy that mirrors heartbreaking storyline

EXCLUSIVE: Rash Masum’s current storyline culminates in this week’s episode of Casualty. WARNING: This article contains references to suicide.

Casualty’s Rash Masum (played by Neet Mohan) finally reaches his breaking point in this week’s episode after struggling with his mental health for the past several months in the long-running BBC medical drama. The popular doctor makes the heartbreaking decision to end his life after resigning from his job.

Speaking exclusively to Express.co.uk actor Neet Mohan admitted that, like so many others, his life has been touched by suicide. For this reason, he and the director of the episode Matt Hilton were very conscious of highlighting how it can appear to “come out of nowhere”.

“It’s an extremely personal issue for a lot of people,” he ruminated. “And it was particularly personal for Matt and we were talking about how, with both of our experiences, we were talking about male suicide.

“We were talking about how, unfortunately, for both of us, we’ve been in situations where we’ve had friends who have done that and it feels like it comes out of nowhere.

“And it obviously didn’t. These friends of ours were obviously suffering for quite a while. But it didn’t seem like that,” he pondered sadly. “I know as TV show we’re able to highlight other things, but part of our discussions was also that side of it.

“I think part of what we were trying to do when we were discussing this as well, was that we were able to highlight different emotions and feelings and thoughts that he’s [Rash] having.

“But it was also discussing how, unfortunately, sometimes we just don’t know what’s going on with people and as much as someone might appear to be okay, they’re really not okay.”

Rash’s decision comes on the heels of his resignation after he takes the fall for Nurse Rida Amaan (Sarah Seggari) who admits to him she is the whistleblower who released damning footage of the ED to a TV documentary crew.

He has been hounded by Patrick Onley (Jamie Glover) for weeks as the Clinical Lead truly believes he is the guilty party.

Having resigned himself to his decision, he tells Patrick it was indeed him and leaves the ED to head home and follow through on his plan.

The scenes are extremely emotional and are sure to be upsetting to some people but Casualty has worked closely with mental health charities to ensure the storyline is both sensitive and accurate.

“What we were trying to do was raise that awareness of a mental health crisis within society, and also within the NHS and men not being OK sadly.

“The numbers [of male suicides] are just so heartbreaking so if it in any way can help anyone speak out or we can highlight anything, that was absolutely what we were trying to do. If we can, that’d be great,” Neet concluded.
