Oh dear, The Young and the Restless is at it again. Whenever the show is uncertain about a character’s direction, it seems to change their job, regardless of how long they’ve been in their current position. In the May 28 episode, Adam revealed to Sally that he had orchestrated her return to the design world, replacing Chelsea at Marchetti. Based on Friday’s spoilers, she’s going to get the job too, and she and Summer will bury the hatchet to work together. However, there are two major issues with this scenario.
Firstly, while it was kind of Adam to advocate for Sally and maybe generous of Chelsea to support her, the reality is that Sally Spectra’s grand-niece is simply not the next big thing in fashion. During her time on The Bold and the Beautiful, both she and the audience were repeatedly reminded that her designs weren’t up to standard. In fact, the first chance she got, Sally appointed then-boyfriend Thomas as Spectra Fashion’s lead designer instead of herself. Toward the end of her stint on that soap, her sketches were so problematic that she was nearly fired from Forrester Creations. She only managed to keep her job by faking a terminal illness to keep new boyfriend Wyatt from returning to his ex.
Adam pitching Sally to Chelsea, who then pitches her to Summer for a job, continues a troubling pattern. Sally has often relied on the men in her life to advance her career. On The Bold and the Beautiful, Thomas gave her money, Liam gave her ownership of Spectra Creations, and Wyatt convinced Bill to finance a company for her. Sally is scrappy and smart and shouldn’t need men to get ahead. Yet, on The Young and the Restless, this pattern continues with Adam and Nick.
Courtney Hope, who plays Sally, is aware of how this makes her character look and doesn’t love it. Earlier this year, she told soaps.com that some people think of Sally as a gold digger, but she is 100% not. She has the skills to succeed on her own and deserves the chance to prove it. If only The Young and the Restless would allow her to do so.
