BBC hit back after Casualty’s trans storyline receives 142 complaints

The BBC has hit back after viewers complained about a recent episode of staple hospital drama Casualty.

The BBC have responded to complaints from Casualty viewers regarding trans character Sah Brockner, who prepared to undergo a double mastectomy, insisting they will offer “different perspectives” on their shows.

Sah (played by Arin Smethurst) was seen in one episode discussing surgery which sparked some backlash, including from campaign groups.

Responding, the BBC explained: “Sah, who is trans and non-binary, joined the Holby Ambulance Service in October 2021.

“In this episode viewers hear Sah telling colleagues they have a date for this surgery.

“We hear from a colleague who questions if Sah is sure about this surgery, and from others who are supportive.

“We also see Paige struggle with this news as she has tested positive for the BRCA gene and is facing the same operation.

“Sah explains that they are not taking this lightly. Viewers will hear different perspectives on this subject in the future.”

The broadcaster saw 142 complaints after viewers claimed the topic was “dangerous”.

During the scene in question, the character told colleagues: “I booked time off because I finally got the date for my top surgery.

“Before you say anything, I know a double mastectomy is not to be taken lightly… for now at least, I’m just happy that I’ll look like the person I feel like on the inside. It’s been a long time coming.”

Their colleagues were supportive of the decision as they celebrated her news with a cup of tea.

Responding to the episode, @FamEdTrust said on Twitter: “Next week, how about a storyline where one of the doctors discusses the connection between autism and gender dysphoria?

“One of the characters could bring up the increasing amount of detransitioners due to regret and irreversible harm done to the bodies of children and young people.”

@PeteNorth303 wrote: “It’s time to scrap the BBC. Enough is enough.”

Others responded differently though, with some praising the storyline.

@urgirlemaline wrote: “I’m so proud & happy for them omfg,” while @BlueBearCharlie added: “Actually, my happiness with my flat chest after my cancer surgery helped me understand that I’m non-binary. Hope that helps.”
