Casualty star teases tragic storyline with Rosa as David battles bipolar disorder

Casualty star Jason Durr, who plays David Hide, spoke on Lorraine about David’s spiralling bipolar battle as he and wife Rosa face the ultimate test

Casualty star Jason Durr, who plays David Hide, opened up on the struggles his character is going to face in upcoming episodes on Friday’s Lorraine.

Speaking to host Christine Lampard, Jason revealed David’s relationship with Rosa Cadenas will face the ultimate test as his mental health spirals.

“David is a wonderful character to play, I’ve been blessed to play him over the last four or five years,” Jason gushed.

“He’s an incredibly complex man, and this the culmination of so many things in his life.

“What we really find out in these next couple of episodes is the minute by minute, hour by hour struggle that David has on a daily basis, just managing his condition.

“Trying to find his normal, and what everyone else around us, and you and I would regard as normal.

“It’s exhausting for him just getting up every day and coping with everything he has to cope with.”

Christine asked: “I suppose it’s even more exhausting for him because he feels he can’t talk to Rosa, his wife, he can’t be completely honest with her?”

Jason replied: “Their relationship is wonderful, they got married very quickly, they don’t know each other very well, they had a shotgun wedding.

“Then she had to go back to Venezuela because her mother is very ill, so no sooner were they together, they were apart.

His marriage with Rosa will be tested as he is too scared to tell her the truth

“David fell back into his routine, and what I’ve learnt over the last five years investigating bipolar is that people with bipolar, there’s the medication that helps, counselling that helps, and the support of friends and family.

“But when it comes to down to it, it’s the individual’s coping strategies, and David falls back on his, which is his routine.”

He continued: “He has his notebook, he has his medication, his bum bag, but his routine gets him through the day.

“If that in any way gets messed around with he isn’t sure if he can cope.

“All those secrets in his life, and worries, he is never sure, can he tell Rosa those things?

“He is terrified of opening up to her because he thinks she might leave him.

“It’s terribly sad, it makes great drama and it’s tragic and uplifting in the same way.”
