*The Young and the Restless* icon, Eric Braeden, has recently taken to social media to defend Alec Baldwin, who is on trial for involuntary manslaughter following the tragic death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins on the set of the western *Rust*. Victor Newman’s portrayer is outraged by the situation. Braeden expressed, “I’ve been an actor since 1962 and have handled many guns on various sets, always as the bad guy. Actors are not responsible for checking if a gun is loaded; that’s the prop person’s job.”
Braeden further explained that typically, both the prop person and the assistant director ensure the gun is safe before handing it to the actor. Holding Baldwin responsible, according to Braeden, is unrealistic and unfair. “As an actor, that’s the last thing you think about. I’ve done numerous action roles, so I know the protocol. Baldwin, however, is not known for action films and would rely on the assurance given to him by the crew.”
In his impassioned defense, Braeden maintained that the assistant director and the armorer are the ones responsible for ensuring the safety of the firearms on set. “Playing Russian roulette with a loaded gun is not something any actor should have to worry about. Baldwin was likely told there were no bullets, and he had no reason to doubt it.”
While Braeden does not know Baldwin personally, he respects him as a fellow actor. Baldwin, who started his career in daytime soaps, is now facing an unimaginable situation. Braeden’s support highlights the responsibilities of the production crew in preventing such tragedies.
