What’s coming up in the ED?
Next week on Casualty, it’s the final chapter for Charlie as he fights for his life, while recalling a momentous day at the start of his career.
Meanwhile, Stevie struggles to regain her confidence and there’s another return.
1. Charlie fights for his life
The team rush Charlie to Resus and frantically start treatment for his stab wound.
As Charlie slips in and out of consciousness, he flashes back to a definitive day at the start of his career, before he came to Holby.
Young, confident, and arriving hungover in his iconic yellow Beetle, Charlie drags himself inside for the surprise retirement party the staff have organised for beloved Charge nurse Shirley, played by former EastEnders star Annette Badland.
Shirley lets Charlie get away with his cocky banter in public, but privately tells him that he needs to pull his socks up if he wants to get the job at Holby he has his eye on.
Soon, Charlie gets his chance to prove himself when a nail bomb explodes, filling the 1980s hospital with serious casualties.
2. Stevie and Zoe clash
In the present day, Stevie and Zoe argue over the best way to treat Charlie, confusing the nurses.
Dylan takes charge, and agrees with Zoe’s suggestion. Stevie walks away, doubting her ability to help once again.
3. Stevie suffers another crisis of confidence
Stevie tells Faith she’s stuck in a loop of second-guessing herself and making the wrong choices.
Despite Faith’s insistence that none of this is her fault, Stevie is scared she’ll be responsible for more deaths.
However, when the news comes in that Mel has been found and urgently needs a doctor at the scene, Stevie realises she has to step up.
At the scene of the accident, Stevie can’t decide what to do. With Iain’s help, Stevie manages to stabilise Mel. But when they return to the ED, Stevie decides to take herself off shift – she no longer trusts herself as a doctor.
4. Zoe confides in Dylan
Dylan and Zoe discover that Charlie’s internal injuries are worse than they feared.
During a heart-to-heart, Zoe apologises for not contacting Dylan when she returned to the UK, and updates him on her plans moving forward.
Zoe also realises that Stevie was right when they argued earlier – they should have thrown everything at helping Charlie.
5. Stevie and Charlie’s past is explored
Back in the ’80s flashback, Charlie tries to comfort a little girl, whose father was caught in a bombing.
In the present, Stevie comes to say goodbye to Charlie, and realises he’s deteriorated while waiting for surgery.
Stevie’s instincts tell her that he has an internal bleed that was missed on the CT scan and realises she is the only one who can help.
In the ’80s, Charlie finds the little girl’s father and makes her feel safe and secure in the hospital. The little girl is revealed to be Stevie – who now finds the confidence to help Charlie in the present. But with the odds against her, can she do enough?
6. Charlie’s fate is revealed
Charlie’s fate is being kept a closely guarded secret, but it has been confirmed that his final episode will air next weekend’s episode.
But with Charlie’s prognosis not looking good, despite Stevie and the teams’ best efforts, does a tragic exit await?
7. Josh is back
Casualty has confirmed the return of another familiar face next week, as part of Charlie’s exit story.
Fan-favourite paramedic Josh Griffiths, played by Ian Bleasdale, will be back at Holby to say a final goodbye to his friend.
But why exactly is he back? You’ll have to wait and see…
8. Jan and Teddy make amends
Jan tries to give Teddy the support he needs.
In the wake of the death of a patient he’d grown close to, Teddy breaks down and tells Jan that everything in his life has gone wrong.
Teddy explains that he’s got nowhere to live, and nobody to talk to about work.
As Jan insists that Teddy will always have her, the emotional breakthrough leads them both to apologise for how they handled Gethin’s death.
